The Art Of Influence Essays - Modern Art, Art Movements, Fauvism
The Art Of Influence THE ART OF INFLUENCE; Africa And Its Influence On Western Art Between The Mid-Nineteenth Century and The First World War During the mid 19th century up until the Great War of 1914, European countries began to heavily colonize and come into contact with African nations. This was called new imperialism. During this contact, European culture was influenced by Africa. The influence of the African people can be seen in the European society of the time. In the 19th and 20th centuries, modern artists embraced African art for its lack of pretension or formal qualities. In the latter part of the 19th century, the scramble for Africa, consolidated at the Berlin Conference, divided the terrain of the African continent among the numerous European contenders. Fourteen countries were represented by a plethora of ambassadors when the conference opened in Berlin on November 15, 1884. The countries represented at the time included Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden-Norway (unified from 1814-1905), Turkey, and the United States of America. Of these fourteen nations, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Portugal were the major players in the conference, controlling most of colonial Africa at the time. At the point of the symposium, only the coastal parts of Africa had been colonized. The idea behind the conference was to also annex control over the resource rich interior. As a result of the scramble, the British received control over Egypt, Sudan Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, as well as, Nigeria and Ghana. The French acquired, much of western Africa, from Mauritania to Chad, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Italians established power in Ethiopia and Somalia, and the Dutch controlled the Congo and South Africa. Portugal took Mozambique in the east and Angola in the west. Germans claimed Namibia and Tanzania, and Spain was rationed Equatorial Guinea. South of the Sahara Desert, there were three distinct types of societies; nomadic tribes in the desert and steppe regions, sedentary farming cultures located in the savanna and rain-forest fringe areas, and the ancient sophisticated kingdoms of Nigeria and the Guinea coast. All three sectors of the African society had different art traditions. However, all three were similar in certain aspects. These aspects being the similar attention to craftsmanship, a general use of non-permanent materials, use of geometric abstraction, and religious orientation. Religion was at most often marked in masks and sculpture. Masks were used in many ritual ceremonies to embody spiritual forces. Geometric and naturalistic shapes were combined to represent a recognizable human face. As part of the daily ritualistic routine, families would often present offerings to cult figures, full-body images kept in homes as insurance of protection. The decorative arts, especially in textiles and in the ornamentation of everyday tools, were a vital art in nearly all African cultures. Wood was one of the most frequently used materialsoften embellished by clay, shells, beads, ivory, metal, feathers, and shredded raffia. As the contact between Europeans and Africans grew, parts of African culture assimilated into that of the Europeans. Europeans would bring home treasures found in Africa on their many journeys. These possessions were various forms of African art. Soon after the European colonization, African art began making its way into European culture. Some of the African artifacts brought back from Africa with Europeans during the colonization period, were displayed at Paris Ethnographic Museum. These tribal or primitive arts of Africa were virtually unknown to many artists until visiting the museum. Pablo Picasso made his first visit in 1907. The artifacts he saw greatly influenced Picasso and his coworkers, such as Georges Braque, who founded the European avant-garde artistic movement of Cubism in the latter part of that year. Cubism was and still is the most influential movement in the history of modern art. The epoch came in three stages. The first stage, Analytic Cubism, was characterized by the simplification, distortion, and emphasis of the forms of objects. It consisted of facets, or cubes, arranged in superimposed, transparent planes with clearly defined edges that established mass, space, and the implication of movement. During this period, Picasso and Braque employed a palette of muted greens, greys, browns, and

Animal Trainer
For education animal trainers often need just a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Some require a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree and additional skills. For example marine mammal trainers usually need a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree in biology, marine biology, animal science, psychology, or a related field. Skills needed for the job are moderately challenging because of the amount of hard labor work involved. They include training, feeding, grooming, bathing, exercising, and cleaning the animals as well as disinfecting and repairing the cages. For references there isnââ¬â¢t much needed. Having a certification is advantageous. For a certification applicants have to demonstrate their practical skills and pass two written exams. As for summer jobs, there are a few that can be helpful to shelter workers or veterinarians. Just volunteering is a good way to get your foot in the door for a good job in that field such as an animal trainer. As an entry level job u would start with on-the-job training learning the basics of taking care of the animals. Employees do prefer to hire people with experience so itââ¬â¢s better to start with an education and work your way up. The working conditions of an animal trainer are tough. Itââ¬â¢s unpleasant and physically or emotionally demanding at times. Most workers have to clean cages and lift hold or restrain animals, risking being bitten or other injuries. Trainers may work outdoors in all kinds of weather, and the work setting can be noisy. For animal trainers hours are very irregular. Often weekend and holiday shifts. Some are on duty 24 hours a day. For vacation time, that isnââ¬â¢t blatantly specified, but based on the facts I know already unless a person is off on the holiday shifts it seems like animal trainers donââ¬â¢t get much of a vacation. Salaries for this job are significantly low at around a max of $31,590 a year. Average salaries are between 16k and 24k. Physical and emotional stress is big in this job. All of the hours worked caretaking for animals, lifting, cleaning; the skills needed basically, can really take a toll on someone in this job. Usually the people that work in this field are veterinarians, animal control, other animal helpers, etc. and they are usually animal lovers. I personally am not an animal lover but I like to have a dog or pet. Youââ¬â¢re evaluated by your peer employees and the employees above you or at a higher authority such as the manager of the establishment. To me there arenââ¬â¢t many advantages to this job besides it works with animals and itââ¬â¢s an easy job to be hired at. The disadvantages are numerous. The hours worked, the time not spent with family, the amount of pain possibly involved and with all of that hard work, not very much in return with a very low salary. If I chose to apply for this job it could definitely help me in the long run if I play my cards right. The more I work as an animal trainer the more I am recognized and could possibly be advanced which includes a higher salary, more time with family, and higher salary, as well as a better future! As an animal trainer Iââ¬â¢d also have a lot of opportunities in my career path, such as advancing up to adoption coordinators, animal control officer, emergency rescue driver, assistant shelter manager, or shelter director. In conclusion, am I suited for this career? , in my opinion no. Referring back to the disadvantages, the amount of hours away from family is a big part of that and the stress involved. That kind of work I can do but itââ¬â¢s not something Iââ¬â¢d enjoy as a career. The positive side is there are a lot of job openings for an animal trainer that if all else fails it are something to fall back on. To possibly attain the goal of being an animal trainer and enjoy it is a stretch but very possible. Possibly a raise or knowing that I will have fun at times. Being able to see my family is what bothers me the most, but a job is a job. Iââ¬â¢ll need one anyway I can get it especially in the shape the economy is in.

Articel summary Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Articel summary - Essay Example However, the article discusses other apartment buildings were tap water was not safe for drinking; and even washing. In my opinion, one apartment building cannot speak for the entire country. In order to reach a conclusive finding, the government officials should have taken into consideration 10 buildings. There are many instances where tap water in Korea has been found to be unsafe for drinking. This shows that there is a problem with tap water in Korea. Also taking another angle in perspective, we can say that the problem does not lie with the management of water in Korea. The water board is effectively managing the water because if an old building in Korea receives safe water, then the entire country receives safe water because water is coming from the same reservoir. It is within the apartment building that the problem is occurring. This study is the beginning and can form the basis for more studies in the field. A positive beginning has been recorded. Only when more research is conducted, can solutions be derived. Thus, this article records a positive step in the right direction. We can expec t improvements in the future with respect to this

Financial Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Financial Analysis - Essay Example Over the past five years the Home Retail Group company has had ups and downs trend in terms of its profits but the gap between the profits is very small, for example the difference in profits between 2012 and 2011 is less than 1% this is an indication that the company maintains its standards of high performance over the period. For example the percentage gross profit for 2010 and 2011 is 45.45%, this was seen in both years, an indication of financial health for the company although not at a very good standards, but it shows that the HRG Company is capable of paying for the operational expenses without financial constraints. There is an increase in percentage of profit margin from 0.11%to 0.055% in the year 2011 and 2012 respectively this an indication that sales are increasingly contributing to the bottom line of the company. This measures how effectively a companys assets are being used to generate profits. It is majorly considered when evaluating the success of a business. A higher number reflects a well managed company with a healthy return on assets. The percent rate of return on assets for Home Retail Group is 0.022% in 2012 although there is a slight increase, there is still a need for improvement in this area to ensure the company can remain competitive and continue to operate successfully. This shows the rate of return on equity capital employed and also measures the ability of a companys management to realize an adequate return on the capital invested by the owners in a company. A higher number is preferred for this ratio. The percent rate of return on equity for Home Retail Group is 0.055% in 2012 and 0.0275% in 2010 there is a slight increase an indication that the management may not be effectively managing the profits earned based on the owners investment in the company. The management should utilize budgets to track expenses on a regular basis, and identify those that are out of line. Assign

Acid Rain :: essays research papers fc
à à à à à Acid rain is a very big pollution problem in the world. It has killed fish and other aquatic life in many lakes and streams. It harms human health, disfigures monuments and erodes buildings, and, along with other pollutants, threatens forests. The story of acid rain can be compared to the plot of a science fiction movie. In the 1950s an invisible force begins to destroy lakes and rivers, killing trout and salmon. By the 1960s it is harming the waters of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. High-altitude forests are beginning to fade away. City statues are gradually eaten away. The appearance from the damage of the aliens is starting to appear all over. Just as in science fiction movies, the authorities refuse to warn the alarmed citizens. Also, at the last moment the scientists figure away to destroy the aliens. Unfortunately, fiction and fact falls apart at this point. There is no quick remedy that will wipe out acid rain completely. (Pringle 1-2) à à à à à Coal was the main fuel of many industries in the early nineteenth century. Coal contains sulfur and when burning it, it will produce sulfur dioxide. When in the atmosphere, sulfur dioxide may be converted to sulfuric acid (Pringle 8). Acid rain is dispensed across the world by air currents. When attempting to fix local air pollution problems, the solutions actually added to acid rain problems on other parts of the world. High smoke stakes were developed to distribute pollutant acid-laden smoke higher in the atmosphere and spread it elsewhere (Merki 598). This was a quick remedy to a local problem, but harmed other parts of the world. Acid rain is a global problem because it more often than not, spreads over national borders instead of staying in a local spot. à à à à à There are several causes of acidification, and various mechanisms by which it may occur. Acid rain falling on water bodies has a direct affect. In areas where soils are acidic, runoff from the soil transports acidic water, which may also contain aluminum, into lakes and rivers. Soil acidification may be caused by acid rain, but other factors may also be involved. For example, if pasture reverts to coniferous acidic runoff even though the rain itself is not acidic. Salty rain leaches acid components out of the soil and transports them to the rivers. (Rivers 1) à à à à à The chemical content of acid rain is in itself dangerous to fish and other freshwater organisms.

Impact of Peers and School in Middle Childhood Essay
Middle childhood is a stage in growth where the members age between six and twelve years. Sigmund Freud defines this as the latency stage where aggressive and sexual urges are introverted. Others theorists have highlighted this stage as very crucial in the development of personality, cognitive skills, inter-personal relationships and motivation. Furthermore, it is at this growth stage that peers and school have great impacts, either positive or negative, to the individual. Schools do promote the childrenââ¬â¢s competence and self-esteem since they are enthusiastic to learn and work. This enthusiasm plays a great role since it acts as a motivating factor. Due to their development in competence in social and interpersonal relationships as aforesaid, they also undergo an experience in peer orientation. If they interact with the best peers, they create a strong foundation for future adult rapports that will be healthy. The diverse relationships may lead to increased violence in schools, drug use, depression and eating disorders that negatively affect the students in the upper elementary education (Blume & Zembar, 2007). In schools, the children also learn and develop interests in other co-curricular activities such as sports, arts and music. However, as they grow, the necessary skills for achieving success in academics tend to become more sophisticated. Those who overcome these challenges end up being academic conquerors but those who are overwhelmed perform poorly in the subsequent years. Oneââ¬â¢s family at this growth stage also plays an important role especially in socialization. The parents, for instance, have the responsibility to make negotiation with the socialization agents on behalf of the child. This kind of socialization that is family-based is directly linked with the childââ¬â¢s deviance, either in the current life or in the future. It may lead to the child indulging in alcoholism, aggression or delinquency. However, through various reinforcement and disciplinary methodologies, the parents teach their middle-aged children on the behaviors to adopt and those to refrain from (Collins, 1984). Academically, parents motivate their children to be performers. This influences them to embrace reading and more often than not, require them to come out directly from school.
